Following on from lasts weeks blog of city breaks, we look into Cardiff, a possibly overlooked city that, when we have ever been there for concerts or the World Rally Championship in the past, we’ve always had a good time! Which makes us want to go back!
Having the camper van allows us to travel anywhere, but it’s not always easy to find campsites local to city centres, we want to experience what the city has to offer (and safely) this can mean relying on public transport or taxis, which isn’t always an option. So, to find these hidden gems of campsites that are so centrally located within the city, means you can walk there and back making a massive difference and saving us some of that all import cash that would otherwise been spent on a hotel room.
Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park does that exactly for us! Located in the heart of the city and only a 15/20 minute walk to Cardiff castle, it provides the perfect base to explore this fantastic city.
Cardiff itself has a plethora of reasons to visit. Like any big city it has an array of shops, sporting venues, restaurants etc. But it doesn’t stop there, if you like history Cardiff Castle is a must! From the Roman occupation of Britain to the Norman Conquest, through civil war turbulence, a Victorian transformation and even the terrors of World War 2, over the past 2000 years, Cardiff castle has seen it all.
If that’s a bit too mundane and you need your white-knuckle ride, head over to Cardiff International White Water, where you can take part in white water rafting, tubing, paddle boarding, gorge walking, to name but a few!
As the dust settles from your adventures, head over to Cardiff Bay and check out Wales Millennium Centre, which is a stunning sight on its own, but it also plays host to some great musicals, concerts and exhibits, something to suit all!
With all this exploring, it’s got to be time for a drink! (let’s face it, that’s what were here for really)
Cardiff has some great craft bars and breweries! Tiny Rebel has a Tap Room hear which is top on our list. This might not be the smallest of breweries, but we are big fans of their beers, so it make sense to check out their Cardiff Taproom, they also offer a great menu, perfect pairing with a couple of their beers!
Another favourite is Brew Monsters Tap house, located in the heart of Cardiff’s Castle Quarter, just yards from Cardiff Castle itself. They serve a selection of Brew Monster beers as well as guest beers sourced from other Welsh breweries. With music on every Friday too, this is somewhere you can easily spend the afternoon, trying some new and interesting beers, as well as taking in some music from local artists. What more could you want!
Another we must mention is Mad Dog Brewery, they have a great taproom again located in the centre of Cardiff, showcasing 10 lines of the tastiest Mad Dog beers available as well as a few rotating guest taps. These guys are doing amazing things in the craft beer scene. Well worth checking them out!
Lastly there’s Pipes, a Small Artisan Brewery Based in Pontcanna, Cardiff. They open Thursday and Friday evenings as well as over Saturday and Sunday for drinks in their Courtyard Tap. They have a great selection of their own craft beers on offer and with it being located only down the road from Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park, I mean it would be rude not too.
This is just a few of the breweries and craft bars on offer in and around Cardiff. So, if you’re heading there for a sports game, concert, the castle, or even just need a stopover on your way to the Gower Peninsula or Pembrokeshire, then don’t overlook spending a few days here. With Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park on the doorstep to the city, taking the campervan on a city break was never easier!
Cheers all!
